AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State needed help from its bench and got it, as Charles Boozer poured in a career-high 19 points to lead the Cyclones to a 73-71 victory over North Dakota State Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
Only nine players were available to compete for the Cyclones this afternoon. Justin Hamilton was sitting out with a concussion, Chris Colvin was serving a suspension, Jamie Vanderbeken will apply for a medical hardship and L.A. Pomlee was dismissed from the team yesterday. It was the opportune time for Boozer to shine.
“We lacked a lot of things today and a lot of that is a credit to North Dakota State," McDermott said. "They were the tougher team. We were lucky we had Charles Boozer on our team and he saved us. Marquis (Gilstrap) ended up having an ankle that bothered him. You need someone on your bench who is going to come in and contribute and (Boozer) did that.”
NDSU raced out to a 19-13 lead behind the hot shooting of Josh Vaughan. Vaughan scored 11 NDSU's first 19 points, including three treys.
ISU then went on an 18-4 run to move ahead 31-23 with 6:45 left in the first half. Boozer came off the bench to score seven points in the rally. The Bison marched right back with seven consecutive points to close the gap to 31-30.
The Cyclones then went on an 11-4 run to end the half with four points from LaRon Dendy to take a 42-35 lead at intermission. Boozer ended the opening period with 12 points and Craig Brackins had 11 to pace the Cyclones.
ISU enjoyed a 10-point lead at 49-39 with 16:57 left in the game, but the Bison knotted the game at 53-53 at the 12:12 mark on a Michael Tveidt bucket. Scott Christopherson ended a three-minute Cyclone scoring drought with a trey from the corner to break the tie and give ISU a 56-53 lead.
NDSU took a 59-56 lead with an Eric Carlson putback at the 9:00 minute mark, but the Cyclones scored seven-straight points from baskets by Brackins, Garrett and Dendy to retake the lead at 63-59 with 6:58 left.
The lead was five points for ISU at 67-62, but the Bison tied it up with five-straight points at 67-67. The Cyclones went into a scoring funk, missing easy shots inside in a three-minute scoring drought. Lucca Staiger buried a long trey with 1:36 remaining to end the skein (70-67), but Tveidt scored on a back-door cut to close the gap to a point at 70-69 with 1:15 left.
Boozer then came up big again, knocking down a 3-pointer to push the lead to 73-69 with 1:03 remaining. Austin Pennick made a lay-up to get back to two points, and the Bison had a chance to win at the buzzer when the Cyclones failed to score at the other end, but Vaughan's three was off the mark and Boozer snatched his fifth board of the game to secure the win.
Brackins ended the game with his 23rd double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. ISU is back in action on Wednesday, playing host to No. 2 Texas.
