AMES, Iowa ? Freshman Avery Bradley scored 24 points, including 16 in the second half, to help No. 1 Texas defeat Iowa State, 90-83, Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Bradley, who finished the game with a 10-of-14 effort from the field, aided the Longhorns to a 49.2 percent clip from the floor, the highest opponent percentage the Cyclones have allowed all season.
ISU hung tough with the top-rated Longhorns, but in the end UT had too many weapons.
"I am proud of the way our team competed," says ISU head coach Greg McDermott. "I felt there was a sense of urgency and certainly our fans fueled that. We just don't have that margin of error with a team as talented as Texas."
Texas raced out to an 18-10 lead, making 60 percent of its shots to begin the game. Bradley tallied six points to move the top-ranked Longhorns out in front early.
ISU struggled out of the gates, making just 4-of-13 shots to start the game. However, a quick 8-0 burst by the Cyclones tied the game at 18-18. Lucca Staiger started the run with a trey and Marquis Gilstrap tallied the other five points to get ISU right back into the game.
UT again took a four-point lead at 24-20, but the Cyclones then scored seven-straight points, four by Craig Brackins and three by Staiger, to go up 27-24 with 7:01 left before intermission.
The Cyclones increased their lead to six points (38-32) with Staiger's third trey of the first half at the 4:23 mark, but Damion James answered with his second consecutive trey to stop ISU's momentum.
ISU held a 44-39 lead with 1:11 before intermission after a putback from Gilstrap, but UT got a conventional 3-point play from Jordan Hamilton to cut the Cyclone lead to 44-42 at the break.
The Longhorns opened the second half in high gear, scoring 10-straight points to go up 52-44 with 18:21 left in the game. Many of UT's baskets were from close range, thanks to a full-court press installed in the second half which forced a couple of ISU miscues.
UT maintained at least a 10-point lead through the next eight minutes of the contest. Every time the Cyclones would close to gap to five points, the Longhorns would answer with a key bucket.
Bradley was the biggest thorn on the Cyclones' side, knocking down four second half treys to keep ISU just out of striking distance throughout the remainder of the second period.
Gilstrap recorded his sixth double-double of the year with 20 points and 13 boards. Brackins added 18 points for ISU.
ISU is back in action Saturday night, traveling to Lincoln, Neb., to face Nebraska. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
