LINCOLN, Neb. ? Iowa State was poised and made the plays down the stretch to come away with an important 56-53 win over Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday night. The win, which improves ISU's record to 12-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, ends a 16-game conference road losing streak.
Cyclones did it with a total team effort, as ISU, which was down to just eight scholarship players, had seven players score six points or more in the tight game. It was the first Big 12 road victory for Cyclone juniors Craig Brackins, Diante Garrett and Lucca Staiger.
“I couldn't be more happy for our team,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “We have guys on this team who had never won a conference road game and they are pretty happy right now. I thought the final two minutes of the game was the best we have played all year. We switched some screens, contested shots and did not let them have a lot of second opportunities.”
The first half was a game of huge runs, as the Cornhuskers held a 32-31 advantage at the break. ISU went ahead by as many as 12 points (26-14) with 8:15 left in the first half behind an 18-5 run. Two treys by Staiger and one by Marquis Gilstrap helped give the Cyclones the early lead.
The momentum quickly changed, however, when ISU went cold and the Cornhuskers caught fire. ISU made just one field goal in the next eight minutes, as NU rattled off an 18-2 run to take a 32-28 lead with just under a minute left. Gilstrap finally stopped the bleeding with a conventional 3-point play with 0:37 seconds left.
The changed hands a couple of times in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as the Huskers were clinging to a 44-41 lead.
After NU took a 46-41 lead, ISU went on a 10-1 run to go up 51-47 with 5:33 left in the game. Scott Christopherson came off the bench and buried two treys to help push the Cyclones back out in front.
NU's Ryan Anderson halted the run with a big trifecta and Sek Henry later added a free-throw to tie the game at 51-51. ISU then scored four-straight points behind an monstrous dunk from Brackins to make it 55-51 ISU.
Jorge Diaz later cut the gap to two points (55-53) with a Husker hoop and NU had a chance to tie the game with 0:40 seconds left, but Diante Garrett came up with a big steal.
After a Husker foul, ISU had the ball without a shot clock, so NU fouled Staiger, who made one of two shots at the line to put ISU up by three at 56-53 with 0:05 seconds left.
NU had one last chance, but Lance Jeter's shot was off the mark.
Gilstrap led ISU with his seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 boards. ISU ended a four-game streak of getting outrebounded, outboarding the Huskers, 45-36.
ISU travels to Texas Tech on Wednesday. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m.
