LUBBOCK, Texas ? Mike Singletary had 23 points and John Roberson added 20 as Texas Tech defeated Iowa State, 78-71, Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena. With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play.
Marquis Gilstrap finished with his eighth double-double of the season, posting 19 points and 12 rebounds. Gilstrap has posted double-doubles in all three Big 12 contests this season.
“It obviously has been a difficult day and a half for our team,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “In that regard, I'm proud of our guys we didn't quit and I think we played our best basketball when we got down 14 points and started to play with a sense of urgency. It's hard to come on the road and win in the Big 12, but we left nine possible points at the free-throw line.”
Craig Brackins had his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Dominique Buckley came off the bench and recorded career-highs of 10 points and five assists. Buckley, who entered the game with just three 3-pointers on the season, nailed a career-high three shots from long distance in the game.
The Cyclones made 10-of-22 from behind the arc, but were outshot 42.6 percent to 41.7 percent from the field. Texas Tech was equally as impressive from long range, connecting on 10-of-20 from 3-point range.
It was a 3-point barrage to open the game as Iowa State nailed three from long range and Texas Tech knocked down two in the first four minutes, giving the Cyclones an early 9-6 edge. The teams battled back-and-forth over the next eight minutes before Singletary scored five in a row to put the Red Raiders up 20-16 with 8:40 left in the opening frame.
The Cyclones responded with a 7-2 run behind four points each from Buckley and Gilstrap to regain the lead at 24-22 with just under six minutes left. Roberson then nailed back-to-back triples and scored 13 points over the final six minutes of the half as Tech went into the half with a 10-point lead (41-31). Texas Tech finished the half on a 19-7 run to close the half.
Buckley topped his career-high in the first half with seven points and Gilstrap added 12 points for the Cyclones, who trailed at the half for just the third time in 18 games.
Iowa State trimmed the Tech lead to five points (43-38) following a Brackins' bucket with 18:50 left in the game, but the Red Raiders went on a 21-10 run over the next 10 minutes to lead by 16 (64-48) with just under nine minutes remaining.
The shorthanded Cyclones didn't give up, slowly chipping the lead down to five points (73-68) with 2:25 remaining after a Diante Garrett basket.
However, each time the Cyclones made a run, Texas Tech had an answer. Brad Reese slammed home a dunk to push the lead back to seven before Brackins made a lay in to trim it back to a five point deficit with 1:14 left, but Texas Tech was able to hold off the late-charging Cyclones.
Iowa State returns to action Saturday at Hilton Coliseum when it plays host to No. 3 Kansas at 1 p.m.
