AMES, Iowa - During its annual Homecoming celebration, the Iowa State University Alumni Association will confer upon Marc W. Urquhart of Weehawken, N.J., the Alumni Merit Award, one of the most prestigious awards given to alumni by the ISU Alumni Association.
The Alumni Merit Award was established by the ISU Alumni Association's Club of Chicago in 1932 to recognize ISU alumni for outstanding contributions to human welfare that transcend purely professional accomplishments.
Urquhart ('89 biology) is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon in Bayonne, N.J., who earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1993. He has been widely recognized for providing outstanding medical care to patients without consideration for their insurance coverage or his own compensation.
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Urquhart played four years for the Iowa State men's basketball team from 1986-89. Urquhart was a starter on Iowa State's 1988-89 NCAA Tournament squad, averaging 5.3 ppg. He was the first Cyclone in school history to record a triple-double, registering 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists vs. Illinois-Chicago on Jan. 9, 1989.
The other recipient of the 2010 Alumni Merit Award is Virginia Olsen Molgaard of Ames.
Recipients of the 2010 Homecoming awards will be honored at the 79th Annual Honors & Awards Ceremony at Ames' Cornerstone Church on Friday, Oct. 29 at 1:30 p.m. The event was moved from ISU's Scheman Building due to concerns about the status of flood recovery efforts in that facility. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information on the 2010 Honors & Awards Ceremony, visit http://www.isualum.org/en/awards/honors_awards/.
