AMES, Iowa ? Thirteen Iowa State cross country student-athletes were named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 team, the league announced Tuesday. The Cyclone men had eight runners on the first team, while the women had five athletes earn first-team honors. The conference named a total of 147 student-athletes to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 team.
Earning first-team honors for Iowa State's men are
Hillary Bor,
Clayton Carper,
Garrett Eklof,
David Lantz,
Ben Murphy-Baum, Dan Murray, Nicholas Schulze and
Alex Whitesell. Bor, Murphy-Baum and Murray earned the honor for the third consecutive season, while Carper, Eklof and Whitesell are now two-time team members.
Earning first-team honors on the women's side are
Nichole Engelhardt,
Ines Fischer,
Kellien Oettle,
Brittany Rover and
Rachel Bell. Bell was among nine student-athletes nominated who hold a 4.0 grade-point average and is now a two-time team member, along with Oettle. Rover has earned the honor for the third consecutive season.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the men's cross country academic all-league squad consisted of 57 first-team members combined with 13 on the second team, while the women had 66 first team recipients and 11 student-athletes on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulatively or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfer students are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
