LINCOLN, Neb.?The Iowa State soccer team could not withstand a pair of one-two punches landed by Nebraska Friday evening at the Nebraska Field, as the Cyclones fell 4-1 in the Big 12 Conference match.
Nebraska (10-5/3-2 Big 12) had two, four-minute periods where it scored all its goals. The Cornhuskers tallied goals in the 28th, 32nd, 74th and 78th minutes. Nebraska's Morgan Marlborough illustrated why she is the Big 12's leading goal scorer, finding the back of the net twice en route to tallying her 14th score of the season.
“Morgan Marlborough is one of the best players we've ever seen,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “We did not have an answer for her. She played like a first-class forward.
“Nebraska is aggressive and dynamic, and it proved to not be a good matchup for us. We came out scared and they outmatched us early on.”
After Nebraska earned a 2-0 lead, Iowa State (6-6-2/1-3 Big 12) got right back into the match when freshman midfielder Emily Goldstein scored at the 38:22 mark. The goal was Goldstein's team-lead-tying fourth of the season and sent the match to 2-1 at halftime. Goldstein's goal also shot her to the top of the Iowa State season-points list.
“Emily Goldstein's goal definitely put us back into the match,” Dillinger said. “We got after it at the start of the second half and created some good scoring opportunities. Once Nebraska scored off a defensive breakdown on a corner kick, they ran away with it from there.”
After the Cyclones fought to find the equalizer in the second half, the Cornhuskers put the match out of reach with their goals at the 73:52 and 77:15 marks.
Iowa State's Caitlin Graboski was sent off after receiving a straight red card in the 81st minute of the match. The red card was the Cyclones' first of the season, and Graboski will be suspended for Iowa State's next match.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played the full 90 minutes and made seven saves. Jobe's season record fell to 5-6-1.
The Cornhuskers outshot the Cyclones 25-11 and had 10 corner kicks to Iowa State's four.
Iowa State travels to Colorado Sunday for a 2 p.m. match.
