LAWRENCE, Kan. - The 10th-ranked Iowa State volleyball team lost its first match to an unranked team since 2008 on Saturday, falling 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17) to the Kansas Jayhawks, who picked up their first win over a top-10 opponent in school history.
Iowa State (11-4, 4-3 Big 12) hit .182 just a game after hitting a season-high .441 against Texas Tech last Wednesday. For their part, the Jayhawks (11-7, 3-4 Big 12) hit .226 behind Karina Garlington who led the team with 18 kills on .378 hitting. Kansas' Melissa Manda had 32 digs, the most digs by an individual player against Iowa State this season.
Senior outside hitter Victoria Henson posted 22 kills in the match, tying her season high on the night in her 90th 10-kill match of her career. Carly Jenson came one dig short of her season-high, grabbing 16 during the Cyclones' seventh four-set match of 2010.
Kansas took the first set on explosive offense from Garlington (five kills), Tayler Tolefree (three kills), who hit .667 in the match, and Allison Mayfield (three kills). The Jayhawk defense collected three blocks as they held the Cyclones to 14 points, the lowest-scoring set by Iowa State since putting up 11 points against Nebraska last season in the NCAA tournament.
Iowa State lifted their hitting to .261 in the second set but was unable to hang on, dropping the set on an ace by Kansas. Closer than the first set, Kansas and Iowa State saw 13 ties and five lead changes in the second set in which neither team lead by more than three.
The Cyclones turned up the heat in the third set, hitting .333 behind eight kills from Henson. Iowa State's defense found a way to contain the Jayhawks for the first time during the match, forcing Kansas to a .103 hitting percentage.
For the second-straight set, Kansas started the fourth set on a scoring run, going up 5-0 before the Cyclones collected their first point of the set. The Jayhawks led throughout the set, although Iowa State threatened late, pulling within three, 20-17, before falling.
