AMES, Iowa - Iowa State got 25 points from Kelsey Bolte and held Western Illinois to just six points in the second half to post a 58-32 win over the Leathernecks in the season opener for both teams.
Bolte, a senior from Ida Grove, Iowa, nailed all six of her 3-point attempts and finished 8-for-10 from the field. She is just the seventh player in ISU history to attempt at least six 3-pointers without a miss. The sharpshooter moved into 17th-place all-time in scoring at Iowa State with 1,105 career points.
The Cyclone defense was the story in the second half as they held WIU to just 2-of-20 shooting from the field to break open a tight game. Western Illinois got a 3-pointer from Valencia Kelly with 17:41 and did not score again until just 2:11 remained in the game.
In the opening stanza, Western Illinois kept it close and trailed by just one at 24-23 with 3:47 remaining in the period. The Cyclones went into the break with a five-point lead (31-26) after closing the half on a 7-3 run. Bolte had 14 points in the opening half, hitting on three 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the game.
Iowa State got nine points and eight rebounds from Chelsea Poppens. Freshman Hallie Christofferson made her first start and posted eight points and five rebounds for the Cyclones, who held a 41-22 edge on the boards and scored 17 second-chance points. Jessica Schroll tallied five points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes.
Lauren Mansfield tallied nine assists in her first game as a Cyclone.
The Leathernecks were paced by Kelly's 11 points.
The win was the 499th of head coach Bill Fennelly's career. Fennelly and Iowa State return to action Monday against Drake at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The game will be televised by Mediacom.
