AMES, Iowa - Iowa State will play its second game in the Global Sports Hy-Vee Challenge on Sunday, playing host to Alabama State at 1 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State kicked off the Fred Hoiberg era on Friday with a 78-64 victory against Northern Arizona.

- Iowa State kicked off the Fred Hoiberg era on Friday with a 78-64 victory against Northern Arizona.
- Iowa State head coaches are now 16-3 all-time in their coaching debuts.
- Iowa State is now 84-20 in home season-openers and has not lost a season-opening game since falling to Northern Iowa on Nov. 23, 1997 (54-48).
- The Cyclones have won 13-straight season-opening tilts.
- Sunday's game vs. Alabama State, along with Friday's Northern Arizona game, are among two of four games in the Global Sports Hy-Vee Challenge...the final two games played in the tournament will be Creighton (Nov. 21- Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines) and Kennesaw State (Nov. 24- Hilton Coliseum).
- Iowa State had six players compete in their first game in a Cyclone uniform on Friday...the Cyclones only dressed nine players in the game.
- Newcomer DeMarcus Phillips did not play vs. NAU and is listed as doubtful against Alabama State on Sunday...he is looking at a possible return next week.

- Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg's debut as the Cyclone coach was an enormous success, as Iowa State defeated Northern Arizona 78-64 Friday night in Hilton Coliseum.
- Iowa State held a 27-point lead with just over 10 minutes in the game and controlled the contest from the opening tip.
- Seniors Jamie Vanderbeken, Diante Garrett and Jake Anderson were instrumental in the victory, scoring 57 of ISU's 78 points (73.1 percent) in the game.
- Vanderbeken and Garrett did all of the scoring for the Cyclones in the first half...Vanderbeken had 20 points and Garrett tallied 15 to account for all 35 first-half points for ISU.
- Vanderbeken, who sat out the majority of last year as a medical redshirt, had an outstanding start to the season, establishing career highs in points (23), 3-pointers (6), field goals (8) and blocks (3).
- Vanderbeken made five of his six treys in the first half to tie for the 11th-best single-game 3-pointer made total in school history.
- Vanderbeken needs one made 3-pointer to meet the required total to rank in ISU's career 3-point percentage record book...his career 43.4 percent total from beyond the arc would rank No. 1.
- Garrett, who started his 65th consecutive game, ended the game with 19 points and a team-high seven assists.
- Garrett tied a career high with three treys (3-6 3FG).
- Garrett needs one steal to reach 100 and he now has 44 games in his career with five or more assists.
- Anderson made an auspicious debut with the Cyclones, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half...Anderson was 7-of-9 from the field and tied for the team high with eight rebounds...he also handed out five assists.
- Melvin Ejim became the 19th freshman in school history to start the season-opener.
- He only played three minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls, but responded with 10 second-half points...he ended the game with four rebounds.
- Iowa State made 11 3-pointers in the game, making 10 or more treys as a team for the first time in 12 games.
- ISU led at the half 35-20, holding NAU to just 26.9 percent from the field.
- NAU's top player Cameron Jones, who is a two-time all-Big Sky selection, was held in check throughout most of the game...Jones missed his first nine shots behind impressive defense from Anderson and Scott Christopherson...he ended up with 15 points on 7-of-21 shooting from the field.
- ISU was outrebounded by the Lumberjacks, 37-35.

- Kenderek Washington led the Hornets with nine points...Ivory White had eight points and eight rebounds in the loss.
- Alabama State, located in Montgomery, Ala., played one exhibition game, defeating Georgia Southwestern State University, 67-57...Washington had 19 points and Ivan Johnson added 16 points to pace the Hornets.
- The Hornets return two starters from last year's squad that went 16-15 overall and finished third in the SWAC with a 12-6 mark.
- ASU began the 2009-10 season at 1-7, but rallied to win 15 of its last 23 games.
- ASU is led by senior Tramaine Butler, who averaged 10.4 points and 2.4 assists in 2009-10...he did not play in the season-opener vs. Creighton.
