PEORIA, Ill. - The Iowa State women's cross country team won the team title at the NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday on the Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill. The women, who have been ranked first in the Midwest region all season, took first place with 35 points. Their first-place finish automatically qualifies them for the NCAA Cross Country Championships Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
"I think today we had a day where everyone ran together," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "I really thought that all seven young ladies ran for each other today. I think that's the first time we've done that since I've been coaching at Iowa State."
The women were led by junior Betsy Saina, who clocked a 20:01.54 second-place finish on Bradley University's 6,000-meter course. The Cyclones saw four of their seven runners finish in the top-10, allowing them to dominate the regional field of 188 athletes.
The men's team recorded a fourth-place team finish with 136 points and will hope to receive one of 13 at-large bids to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The NCAA will announce the at-large teams on NCAA.com by 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14.
The Cyclone men were led by Hillary Bor and Rico Loy, who finished the 10,000-meter course 13th and 14th, respectively. Bor and Loy also led the men's squad at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Okla. two weeks ago.
"We set out to be third," Ihmels said. "Going into the race, we thought we needed to be third or fourth to get to nationals. I challenged the guys to really lay it out there for the team. I think we had great performances from Rico Loy and Ben Murphy-Baum. At the end of the day we were competitive and I think we put ourselves in a good spot for the at-large bid."
The men's and women's squads both beat out the University of Iowa, who placed seventh on both sides. Both squads earned two points for Iowa State towards this year's Cy-Hawk Series tally.
The NCAA Cross Country Championships are set to begin at noon on Nov. 22 with the women's 6,000-meter race from Terre Haute, Ind.
