AMES, Iowa - Iowa State's Scott Christopherson didn't miss a shot, scoring a career-high 29 points, 19 in the first half, as Iowa State outscored Drake 37-13 in the last 15 minutes before halftime and went on to deliver the Bulldogs their worst ever defeat in a series that began in 1908, 91-43 Wednesday in Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State's previous biggest win was a 119-81 victory in Ames in 1993. Iowa State, 3-0, plays Creighton at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena. Drake falls to 1-1.
It was a perfect night for Christopherson, who was 11-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-5 from three-point range. When he left the game after a pair of free throws with 8:49 left in the game, he had outscored a frustrated Drake team that was held to just 22 percent shooting for the game, 29-28. Christopherson's effort equaled the field goal percentage school mark of 11-for-11 from the field (1.000) held by Mark Baugh, set January 25, 1989 vs. Western Illinois. His 5-for-5 mark from three-point territory equaled the school record set by Ron Bayless (5-for-5) at Colorado on March 7, 1992.
As he left the court, Iowa State had its biggest lead, at 49 points (77-28).
The two teams were locked up at 8-8 early when Iowa State point guard Diante Garrett hit a fall away jumper in the lane. That was followed by a Christopherson three-point make with 14:37 to go off a dish from Jake Anderson that gave Iowa State a 13-8 advantage.
After a timeout, Christopherson snuck into the lane for a bucket. The Cyclones then got a defensive stop as the shot clock ran out on Drake and Christopherson came back with a driving layup and then another three for a 20-8 Cyclone advantage 11:54 left in the first half.
Christopherson left the game for a breather at the 9:24 mark of the first half with ISU in the lead 25-9. A Seth VanDeest free throw was the only Drake point during the Cyclone surge as ISU led 31-11 before Jordan Clarke netted the Bulldogs first basket in more than 10 minutes. But Christopherson, just back in the game, hit another three for a 34-13 Iowa State advantage.
When Garrett closed out the half with an off balance baseline jumper at the buzzer, the Cyclones led, 45-21 at the break. Christopherson's 19-point first-half total equaled his previous career single-game high.
During the game, Garrett passed Jamal Tinsley in career assists to move into the No.7 spot in Iowa State history. Garrett hit a basket from the corner to start the second half when ISU went up 52-22 with 17:51 left in the half.
Melvin Ejim and Garrett finished the game with 14 points to lead Iowa State. Cyclone Calvin Godfrey scored two points but grabbed a game-high and career-high 14 rebounds. Clarke and Kurt Alexander scored eight points each for Drake.
Drake's 22.4 percent shooting from the floor was the third-lowest by an Iowa State opponent since 1950.
