IRVING, Texas – Four Iowa State football players were named second-team All-Big 12 by the league's coaches Tuesday. Tight end Collin Franklin, center Ben Lamaak, linebacker Jake Knott and cornerback Leonard Johnson earned second-team honors. Five other Cyclones earned honorable mention all-conference honors. ISU head coach Paul Rhoads received honorable mention for the 2010 Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year Award.
Franklin had a great senior season, ranking second nationally (to Missouri's Michael Egnew) at 4.5 receptions per game. The Simi Valley, Calif. native led Iowa State with 54 receptions for 530 yards, with three touchdowns. He finished his career with 87 receptions for 980 yards and five touchdowns. Lamaak played three different positions during his four-year career at Iowa State. The Cedar Rapids native played at center in 2010 and finished his career with 42 starts.
Knott has had an exceptional season and leads the Big 12, averaging 10.83 tackles per game. He is tied for 11th nationally in that category. Knott had one of the best sophomore seasons in Iowa State history. The Waukee native made 130 tackles, broke up five passes, made four interceptions and forced four fumbles. Knott made 16 tackles at Colorado and broke up three Buffalo passes. He also received honorable mention for the league's defensive player-of-the-year award. At Oklahoma, Knott made 13 tackles. Johnson has proven himself as one of the Big 12 Conference's best covermen. Johnson, a native of Clearwater, Fla., made 64 tackles this season, breaking up a team-high seven passes.
Earning honorable mention recognition were punter Kirby Van Der Kamp, linebacker A.J. Klein, defensive end Jake Lattimer, offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele and strong safety David Sims. Van Der Kamp, who leads the nation's freshmen punters, averaging 45.17 yards per kick, also received honorable mention honors for the Freshman-of-the-Year Award. The West Des Moines native ranks 13th nationally. His average ranks second in Iowa State single-season history.
