AMES, Iowa - Iowa State battled back from 20-point first-half deficit before running out of steam at the end, falling to Oklahoma State, 69-64 Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones, who fall to 13-13 overall and 2-9 in Big 12 play, took a 3-point lead with 12:02 left in the game after being down by as many as 20 points in the first half. However, OSU's Obi Muonelo made numerous key shots in the second half en route to his game-high 31 points.
"The start of the game really hurt us," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "I didn't feel like we practiced with as much focus and energy the last couple of days. We made some poor decisions with the ball and on the defensive end early on and we could not recover."
A slow start by the Cyclones made the home team play catch up right from the start. ISU was just 2-of-9 from the field and committed four turnovers in the first eight minutes of the contest to fall behind 16-6.
The Cowboys got the early lead behind a trio of treys from Keiton Page, Muonelo and James Anderson.
It got worse for the Cyclones, as OSU went on a 13-2 run to take a 30-10 lead with 7:45 left in the first half. Page scored seven of the Cowboys' 13 points in the run.
A Scott Christopherson 3-pointer cut the lead to 15 points (30-15) at the 6:53 mark of the first half, but two 3-point plays by Anderson pushed the Cowboy lead back up to 20 points (36-16) with 5:45 remaining before intermission.
But the Cyclones miraculously found away to claw back into the game before the break, going on a 14-1 run in the final 4:41 minutes of the half to trim the lead to 37-30. Craig Brackins scored his first two baskets of the game and Justin Hamilton notched five points in the run to revive ISU's chances.
Another Christopherson trey cut the OSU lead all the way down to two points (37-35) in the early moments of the second half. The Cowboys finally ended an over eight-minute field goal drought with a Page jumper to get the lead back up to four points.
With the Cowboys clinging to a slim two-point margin, Muonelo came up huge with back-to-back treys to improve the OSU lead to 45-37 with 16:28 left in the game.
However, the Cyclones showed incredible resilience again, rattling off 10-straight points to take their first lead of the game at 47-45 with 12:52 left in the contest. Hamilton scored four points and Christopherson busted his fourth bomb to help ignite the crowd.
The Cowboys then started to mount a lead as ISU went cold after the game was tied at 52-52 with 10:02 left. Muonelo and Anderson made consecutive 3-pointers to give the Cowboys a 63-55 advantage with 3:50 left in the contest.
The Cyclones weren't quite done yet, cutting the lead to three points (67-64) with 0:34 seconds left. ISU had a 3-point opportunity from Christopherson rim out and then turned the ball over on an inbound pass before the Cowboys iced the game from the free-throw line.
Christopherson finished the game with a career-high 19 points behind a career-high seven field goals. ISU shot below 40 percent (35.1 percent) for the fourth consecutive game. Hamilton added 11 points and nine boards for the Cyclones.
ISU plays host to No. 24 Texas A&M on Saturday.
