AMES, Iowa - No. 24 Texas A&M held off a late Iowa State rally to record a 60-56 victory over the Cyclones Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
ISU, which drops to 13-14 overall and 2-10 in the Big 12, could not overcome another poor shooting night, making a season-low 32.2 percent of its shots from the floor. It was the fifth-straight game where ISU failed to shoot 40 percent from the floor.
"I'm not going to fault their effort and because it was where it needed to be," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "When their defensive plan is to muddy up the lane, you are going to have to make a few shots. We didn't get very many to fall today."
Texas A&M maintained a lead throughout most of the first half, inching ahead 17-11 after a Donald Sloan bucket with 11:42 left before intermission. A 6-1 run by the Cyclones, featuring a pair of baskets from Diante Garrett and Craig Brackins, cut the Aggie lead to one-point (18-17) at the 9:58 mark of the opening period.
The Aggies raised their lead to six points on a couple of occasions, but Garrett found a way to keep ISU in the game with nifty drives to the hoop. Garrett scored six-straight points for ISU to cut the lead to 27-23 with 2:56 left before the half.
TAMU took a 31-28 lead into the break. Both teams struggled from the floor, as ISU made 40.7 percent of its shots and TAMU connected on only 37.9 percent of its shots. Garrett finished the half with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor.
Both teams could not find the basket in the early part of the second half. ISU briefly took its first lead since the opening moments of the game on a Marquis Gilstrap putback (35-34), but the Aggies got baskets from Sloan and Nathan Walkup to retake the lead at 38-35 with 14:47 remaining in the game.
Another Cyclone drought allowed the Aggies to slowly take control of the game. After a Justin Hamilton lay-in made it 40-39, ISU went over four minutes without a point. Meanwhile, the Aggies took advantage with an 11-2 run to go up 51-41 with 8:25 left in the contest.
The Cyclones still had a little gas in the tank, rallying for a 9-0 run to cut the Aggie lead to 54-53 with just over a minute left in the game. Gilstrap had five points in the run. Loubeau finally ended a five-minute scoring drought for TAMU with a score down low to increase its lead to 56-53 with 1:06 left in the game. ISU missed on its next two possessions and the Aggies made their free-throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Gilstrap and Garrett led ISU in scoring with 15 points. Hamilton tied a career high with 12 boards, his third double-digit rebounding effort in the last four games.
