Iowa State Picks off UNI 7-0

WATERLOO, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team swept intrastate rival Northern Iowa with a 7-0 victory Wednesday afternoon, improving its record to 4-2 for the season.

Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst picked up the first win of the afternoon, defeating UNI's Talia Jang-Stewart and Sampada Kanade 8-3 to put the pair at 5-1 for the season. Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer improved their doubles record to 5-0, picking up an 8-6 win over Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Jessica Kunzelmann, clinching the doubles point for ISU. Marie-Christine Chartier and Jasmine Lee went 9-8 with Stefannia Sampaio and Phoebe Walker of UNI, leading the pair to a tiebreaker they won 7-4.

"We played very well in singles," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "Winning the doubles point helps us come out with a lot more confidence in the singles."

In No.1 singles, Karonis improved her record to 5-1, picking up a 6-2, 6-3 win against Walker. Maria Macedo made quick work of Gonzalez-Garrido with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Langhorst pulled out a 6-2, 7-5 win over Sampada Kanade to improve her singles record to 5-1 for the season and clinched the match. Chartier quickly defeated Kunzelmann 6-4, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. Wischer also made quick work of Sampaio going 6-0 in the first set before defeating her 6-1 in the second. Play wrapped up with Jasmine Lee defeating Katy Delagardelle 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 6 slot .

The Cyclones will face Marquette (7-3) Feb. 20 in Iowa City, Iowa.
