DES MOINES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team made the quick trip to Des Moines for a match with intra-state rival Drake, and came away with a 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs. The Cyclones started off strong in doubles action and kept the momentum throughout the singles slate for the win. Iowa State improved to 2-2 with the win.
Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst started the night off right, quickly picking up an 8-2 win against Gabriela Demos and Manca Krizman in No. 1 doubles. Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer followed suit, picking up an 8-3 win against Jessica Labarte and Amanda Aragon to put the pair at 3-0 in doubles for the season. With the doubles point clinched, Marie Chartier and Jasmine Lee dropped the No. 3 doubles match in a tiebreaker (7-5).
"Certainly the doubles point is a very important point," Espinosa said. "Winning the doubles point gave us a little more momentum to come forward and win."
In singles, Chartier picked up a quick 6-1, 6-2 win against Drake's Labarte. Maria Macedo also made quick work of the Bulldogs, defeating Ali Patterson 6-2, 6-4. Reka Kelemen clinched the match win for the Cyclones after defeating Drake's Aragon 6-4, 6-4.
"We did a much better job in singles today," Espinosa said. "We came out strong and played well. Everyone fought hard top to bottom."
In the No. 1 singles slot, Karonis quickly defeated Demos 6-2 in the first set before sneaking out a close 7-5 victory in the second. Langhorst picked up her third singles win this season, defeating Aguilera 6-2, 6-4.
In the last match of the evening, Tessa Lang earned a 6-4 win in the first set before sending the second set to a tiebreaker and falling 7-5 against Krizman. Lang and Krizman played a tiebreaker in place of the third set, with Krizman pulling out a 10-7 victory.
"With Tessa, the match could have gone either way," Espinosa said. "She was right there and missed a few shots. We just need to move forward and focus on tomorrow, which should be a better test of our skills."
The Cyclones will face Illinois-Chicago (3-1) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines Saturday at 9 a.m.
