AMES, Iowa ? A 17-4 run to start the second half propelled No. 10 Kansas State to a 79-75 victory over Iowa State Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. ISU held a four-point cushion at the break, but the strong KSU surge put the Wildcats in control for the rest of the game.
The Cyclones, who dip to 13-10 overall and 2-6 in league play, were led by Craig Brackins, who tallied his eighth double-double of the season with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Denis Clemente led the Wildcats with 30 points.
KSU raced out to an early 13-8 lead thanks to a hot start from the field, connecting on 5-of-8 shots to begin the game.
The Wildcats then missed their next seven shot attempts and the Cyclones slowly grabbed the lead at 14-13 with 12:33 left in the first half. Brackins was feeling it for the Cyclones, hitting 5-of-9 shots from the field while scoring 10 of the team's first 14 points.
After KSU increased its lead to six points (21-15), the Cyclones went on a 14-4 run to go ahead 29-25 with 2:07 left before intermission. Chris Colvin hit ISU's first 3-pointer of the game to give ISU its largest lead of the first half at six points (35-29) with just under 0:30 seconds left before the half.
ISU went into the break with a 35-31 lead, as Brackins had 14 points in the opening period to pace the Cyclones.
A Marquis Gilstrap bucket kept ISU up by four points early in the second half, but the Cyclones went cold for a stretch to allow KSU to take control. Clemente knocked down back-to-back treys to trigger a 13-0 run that put the Wildcats up 48-39 with just over 15 minutes left in the game.
The Wildcats maintained their comfortable lead throughout most of the second half. The closest ISU got was four points (60-56) behind a 9-2 run at the 5:51 mark, but KSU answered with eight-straight points to stop the ISU momentum.
The Cyclones lengthened the game and drew to within four again at 79-75 before running out of time.
ISU outrebounded KSU, 46-45, winning the battle of the boards for the third time in the last four games.
Gilstrap was also in double-digits with 18 points, as was Diante Garrett, who finished with 10 points and five assists.
The Cyclones travel to Missouri on Wednesday to face the Tigers at 6:30 p.m.
