KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Damion James had 28 points and 16 rebounds as Texas defeated Iowa State, 82-75, in the opening round of the Big 12 Championships Wednesday evening at the Sprint Center. The Cyclones finish their season 15-17 overall.
The Cyclones, who had five players in double-digits, were led by Marquis Gilstrap's 17 points and eight rebounds. Craig Brackins chipped in 15 points and Diante Garrett added 14 in the losing effort.
LaRon Dendy finished with 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the field. Dendy finishes the season having made his last 11 field goal attempts. Scott Christopherson was the other Cyclone in double figures with 10 points.
Texas stormed out of the gates scoring the first seven points of the game before the Cyclones responded with a 9-2 run of their own to tie it. Christopherson tallied five points in the run, which also included a Garrett jumper and a Dendy dunk.
ISU took its first lead at 17-16 on Dendy's short jumper with 10:36 remaining in the opening stanza. Following an Avery Bradley jumper, Brackins knocked down a baby hook to regain the Cyclone lead at 19-18, but the Longhorns responded with a 7-0 run to go up 25-19.
The Cyclones spent the remainder of the half trying to get back in it, finally drawing to within three at 31-28 as the teams went to the locker rooms.
Dendy led the Cyclones in scoring with eight points in the opening frame while Brackins added six. James had 10 points to pace the Longhorns.
The Cyclones were within one in the second half (41-40) following a Christopherson jumper, but Texas went on a 13-6 run to gain control of the game at 54-46.
ISU was able to scrap back to within one (60-59) with just under nine minutes remaining following a 7-0 run, but the Longhorns responded with an 11-0 run of their own to all but seal the deal.
The Cyclones kept it within reach toward the end, but Texas seemed to have a counterpunch to every ISU rally.
Iowa State shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the field while Texas scorched the nets at a 47.6 percent (30-63) clip. The Longhorns also held a 46-34 edge on the glass.
Garrett finished with a game-high eight assists to move up to 14th on the single-season assist chart with 164.
Dexter Pittman and Gary Johnson finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while Avery Bradley was also in double-digits with 10.
