COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Tien Tran earned a spot at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday evening at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships.
Tran becomes the third ISU diver in the NCAA era to earn a ticket to the Championships. She joins Janet Lahti (1986, '87) and Hillary Nichols (2005) as Cyclone divers to attend the NCAA Championships. Tran will join swimmer Nan Liu at the meet, which will be held March 18-20 in West Lafayette, Ind. This marks the first time in the NCAA era that Iowa State will send a swimmer and a diver to the Championships.
“It is fantastic,” Iowa State diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “Yesterday we were pretty sure she was in and now it is official. I am proud of her and we're excited to be going to nationals.”
In the 3-meter event, Tran finished in 10th place with a 12-dive total of 599.25. She once again put her best foot forward in the preliminary session, finishing the first six dives in 10th place with a score of 298.65. Tran had three 50-point dives to propel herself into the finals for the second night in a row.
In the finals, Tran once again showed her consistency, compiling a score of 300.60 in the six dives to complete her top-10 finish. Tran had four dives of at least 50-points in the finals.
“I was really proud of her today to go about 300 in both prelims and finals,” Warrick said. “It is great because she has never done that at the zones before and she was consistent the whole time.”
Abby Christensen put up a solid showing on the day as well. Christensen dove just below her season average of 243.21 on 3-meter, putting together a six-dive total of 242.35 to finish 25th. Warrick was pleased with the job Christensen put in on Saturday.
“She did really well, I was really proud of her,” Warrick said. “Her back 2 ? and reverse 2 ? were both great. We talked about what she needed to improve and she did and she did a really good job today.”
Warrick also went on to compliment the mental toughness of his divers through the first two days of competition.
“I am proud of how they both have stayed in this event mentally,” Warrick said. “This is a tough event and whenever they may have had a small slip, they have both bounced back well.”
The duo wraps up competition tomorrow with platform diving. Prelims begin at 11 a.m.
