VERMILLION, S.D. – The Cyclones posted a collection of strong individual and relay performances Friday at the University of South Dakota, paced by the Cyclones' relay teams, distance swimmers and the breaststroke group. Iowa State came away with a win in nearly every event, leading them to the overall win over the Coyotes with a final score of 168-123.
"The Cyclones showed up today," said head coach Matt Leach. "We came out strong and finished every event very well. We had multiple people step up, including our double event winners; Kendall Mallers, Anja Peck, Carlotta Gazzola, Lili Neisser and Kate Mitchell."
How It Happened
Iowa State opened the night with a statement in the 400 medley relay as the team of Emma Kuhn, Matilde Geromin, Keirlyn Mullica and Corinne Guist touched the wall first in a time of 3:54.69 to give the Cyclones an early advantage. The 200 free relay also posted a winning time of 1:37.90 (Hagen, Neisser, Swoboda, Kuhn).
In the backstroke events, Lili Neisser produced a pair of top finishes for the Cyclones, winning the 100 back in 57.22 and topping the 200 back in 2:05.77. Emma Kuhn also had a strong night, taking the 200 IM in 2:06.56 while also giving Iowa State a strong finish in the anchor spot for the 200 free relay.
The breaststroke events continued to be a focal point for the Cyclones. Anja Peck was first in the 100 breast (1:04.85) and followed with a victory in the 200 breast (2:18.53). Grace Swoboda and Matilde Geromin also came away with podium finishes in both breast events, where Swoboda finished second in the 100 breast (1:05.15), and second in the 200 breast (2:21.66). Geromin came away with the third-place spot in the 100 breast (1:05.58) and 200 breast (2:23.29), showing depth for Iowa State.
On the boards, the Cyclones were led by Kate Mitchell and Maggie Bendell. Mitchell won the 1-meter with a score of 274.80 and took the 3-meter title, scoring 281.70, while Bendell finished runner-up on the 1-meter (255.00) and the 3-meter (281.50). Ally Blumenfeld and Jade Hazes also had solid performances on the boards as well.
"The continued drive to work the fundamentals and execution was on full display today," said Leach. "Learning how to race and deliver was also an improvement from earlier in the season! It was a great weekend for Cyclone Nation! Go Cyclones!"
