AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Swimming and Diving (2-3, 0-0 Big 12) will make the trip to Iowa City this week for the annual Hawkeye Invitational, the Cyclones' first invitational of the season.
THE OPPONENTS – Hawkeye Invitational
The four-day invite will take place Tuesday, Nov. 18, through Friday, Nov. 21 at the University of Iowa Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC). Teams competing include Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Miami (Fla.), Nebraska, UNI and Washington State.
The Cyclones will see familiar faces this weekend, matching up once again with Illinois and Nebraska, as well as facing off against in-state rivals, Iowa and UNI.
LAST TIME OUT – South Dakota State, South Dakota
Iowa State enters the week coming off back-to-back road wins over South Dakota and South Dakota State in October. The Cyclones showed strength and growth across all events, winning nearly every race in Vermillion to close out a dominant two-meet stretch.
In South Dakota, the breaststroke group continued to lead the way as sophomore Anja Peck swept both the 100 and 200 breast events. Carlotta Gazzola earned two victories in the distance races, while Kendall Mallers picked up wins in both the 100 and 200 flies.
On the boards, Kate Mitchell swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, while Maggie Bendell added two runner-up finishes.
The Cyclones also set two pool records at South Dakota State, including the 400 free relay (Emma Kuhn, Grace Swoboda, Piper Hagen, Corinne Guist) and 1650 freestyle (Gazzola), giving them momentum heading into the Hawkeye Invitational.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Breaststroke, Backstroke, Distance Freestyle and Diving
The Cyclones have been competing with strength across multiple event groups, with the breaststroke, backstroke and distance freestyle events continuing to stand out. The breaststroke squad has consistently placed in the top three in dual meets, while Carlotta Gazzola has dominated the distance races with four straight victories.
In the backstroke events, Lili Neisser and Emma Kuhn have provided steady performances in both the 100 and 200 distances, while on the boards, Kate Mitchell and Maggie Bendell look to build on their recent success, with Mitchell already achieving NCAA Zone-qualifying scores.
ON DECK – US Open Championships (Swim), Minnesota Invitational (Dive)
The Cyclone swim team looks to send qualifiers to the US Open Championships held in Austin, Texas, while the dive team will take their talents to the Twin Cities where they will compete in the Minnesota Invitational, with both events taking place on December 4th-6th.
