Iowa State Takes Down Cleveland State

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team posted a convincing win over the Cleveland State Vikings, 6-1, Thursday morning to improve the Cyclones' season mark to 8-6.

In doubles action, Maria Macedo and Tessa Lang made quick work of the Vikings' Nicloe Janek and Maria Lazaris, defeating the pair 8-4. Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer fell behind early, 7-4, before fighting back to 9-8. In the tiebreaker, Palen and Wischer went point-for-point with Sandra Bjelan and Mengdi Liu before knocking off the pair, 10-8, to clinch the doubles point for ISU. Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst fell, 8-1, to Catrine Bjerrehus and Charlotte Gibbons.

"We came out with the victory, but we need a bit more discipline,"Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. "Cleveland State is a feisty team and they did a great job in doubles and we could have lost the doubles point."

Macedo picked up the first singles point for the Cyclones, quickly defeating Lazaris 6-2, 6-1. Lang earned an easy win over Janek, 6-2, 6-0, while Karonis clinched the meet for the Iowa State, defeating Bjerrehus 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 1slot.

In other singles action, Marie-Christine Chartier picked off Bjelan. She won the first set, 6-0, before dropping the second 7-6. In the tiebreaker, Chartier fought back to win the third set 6-3. Reka Kelemen also defeated the Viking's Liu, 6-4, 6-1. Langhorst won her first set 7-5 against Gibbons and fell 6-4 in the second. The pair played a tiebreaker in place of the third set, which Langhorst dropped 10-7.

"Even though we pulled off the victory, I still feel like we can do better things, so hopefully we can fix it and get back to performing the way we should in the next matches," Espinosa said.

The Cyclones will continue their home stand today against South Dakota at 2 p.m.
