AMES, Iowa - Zaire Taylor made a driving bank shot at the buzzer to rescue Missouri Tuesday night in a 69-67 overtime victory over Iowa State in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones had the final possession in regulation but couldn't get a shot off and held a four-point lead in the overtime period. The loss drops ISU to 14-16 overall and 3-12 in the Big 12.
The game was tied at the half at 31-31 with both teams playing a fairly even first 20 minutes. The lead was no higher than four points for both sides.
Craig Brackins had the hot hand for the Cyclones, tallying 12 points and eight boards in the opening period. His 12 points in the first half increased his career total to 1,503 points, becoming just the sixth player in ISU history to record 1,500 points and 700 rebounds in a career.
J.T. Tiller led the Tigers with 10 points behind a 2-of-2 effort from 3-point range.
ISU held a 41-38 lead with 11:33 left in the game, but points were hard to come by. MU started the half by making just 2-of-16 from the field (12.5 percent) and the Cyclones weren't much better at 33.3 percent (4-12 FG).
The Tigers finally found their stroke going on a 10-3 run to move ahead 48-44 with 9:02 left in the game. Marcus Denmon buried two treys in the Tiger spurt.
The Tigers still held a four-point lead (54-50) after a Laurence Bowers jumper, but Scott Christopherson answered with a huge trey and followed it with a steal which led to a pair of Diante Garrett free throws to push the Cyclones back out in front at 55-54 with 4:14 remaining.
The Tigers retook the lead at 57-55 on a Keith Ramsey putback, but the Cyclones followed with two-straight buckets to take the lead. Garrett had a shot goal-tended to tie the game and then Marquis Gilstrap followed the score when he went coast-to-coast after a defensive rebound with 1:21 left to make it 59-57 ISU.
After a Marcus Denmon tied the game, Brackins sank two clutch free-throws to push the ISU lead back up to two points (61-59) with 0:33 seconds left. MU again made a superb play when Zaire Taylor knotted the score (61-61) on a drive with 0:17 seconds left.
ISU had one last chance in the final seconds, but failed to get a shot off before the horn sounded to send the game into overtime.
The Cyclones scored the first four points of the overtime on Garrett and Gilstrap baskets, but the Tigers tied it up with back-to-back buckets to make it 65-65 with 1:39 left in the overtime period.
After ISU again pushed the lead to two points on a Gilstrap basket, Zaire Taylor made an acrobatic shot with 0:11 seconds left to tie the game at 67-67. The Cyclones then made a critical turnover with 0:06 seconds left, giving the Tigers the ball with the last shot.
Taylor then drove the lane for the winning hoop at the buzzer.
Brackins finished the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds, notching his 30th career double-double. Gilstrap added 15 points and 13 boards for his 10th double-double of the season. Garrett (14), Christopherson (11) and LaRon Dendy (10) were also in double-digits for the Cyclones.
ISU closes out the regular season at No. 5 Kansas State Saturday night.
