Saturday, April 3: Scrimmage No. 2Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads thinks the big picture of the Iowa State football program is looking good after a scrimmage that followed the Cyclones' spring practice Saturday in Jack Trice Stadium. On a brisk but pleasantly sunny day, the Cyclones scrimmaged, facing a variety of situations. “You can see we are a tougher football team,” Rhoads said. “We are more physical. There was a lot of good contact on both sides of the ball. The bottom line is that we are more athletic overall.” The day included a number of carries for sophomore tailback Beau Blankenship and his redshirt freshman teammates James White and Jeff Woody. White demonstrated superior cutback skills. He is from Dallas, Texas. Woody had several impressive runs. He is from Pleasant Hill and played prep football at Southeast Polk. The Cyclones' leading returning rusher, Alexander Robinson, saw limited action but shined during his opportunities. “I thought our young guys showed some potential,” Rhoads. “We still had a couple of guys put the ball on the ground today and that is unacceptable. Ultimately, we have demonstrated that we are doing a lot things better so far this spring.” The Cyclones practice again Tuesday.
