AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team made a surprise visit to fans that purchased season tickets for the upcoming year.
All members of the 2010 team traveled around the Ames area and hand-delivered tickets to their fans.
"This is just a small way in which we can thank our fans for their support," said Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. "We feel as though we have the best fans in the nation and our players really enjoy the opportunity to get out and interact with our supporters."
Cyclone volleyball season ticket holder Chelon Stanzel was one of the lucky fans to get the tickets delivered to her door.
"We ordered the tickets before we knew that the team was going to do this," Stanzel said. "But we were very surprised and pleased at the fantastic gesture by the team to bring the tickets to us fans."
The effort that the team is making to personally thank their fans seems to be paying off, as Iowa State ranked ninth in the nation in attendance for the 2009 season, averaging over 2,700 fans per match. The year before the Cyclones averaged 1,600 fans per match and were ranked 14th nationally in attendance.
"I think that the team doing this is awesome, but it will be much more difficult because the fan base is growing rapidly," Stanzel said. "But everyone appreciates them doing this very much and we are all proud to have season tickets to such a great program."
The first home game of the season is Sept. 3 against UW-Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. at the Ames High School gymnasium. All Cyclone volleyball home games will be played at Ames High School due to the flooding of the Hilton Coliseum.
