AMES, Iowa - It was a big day for Iowa State running back Jeff Woody. The redshirt freshman from Southeast Polk High School was the Cyclones' scout team player of the year in 2009. Thursday, Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads awarded Woody a scholarship.
“Jeff is a contender in our backfield to complement the presence of Alexander Robinson,” Rhoads said. “He has been consistent in performance. Jeff will be on the field a lot this season, as a running back and on several special teams. It is truly one of the best moments you have as a coach when you reward a player who has given all that you have asked.”
For his part, Woody was surprised by his coach.
“I didn't see it coming,” Woody said. “The way I understood the numbers I didn't think there was scholarship open. It is a great feeling.”
Woody came to Iowa State after rushing for 3,481 yards and 39 touchdowns in his junior and senior seasons at Southeast Polk. An all-around athlete, Woody lettered in baseball, wrestlng and track and field.
Woody is in a battle for playing time in a backfield that includes Robinson, sophomore Beau Blankenship and redshirt freshman James White along with true freshmen Shontrelle Johnson and Duran “Duck” Hollis.
The first game is just two weeks away. Iowa State plays host to Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2.
