AMES, Iowa - Iowa State held its annual Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage this afternoon, but this time around it was not only the first live action of the fall, it was also a chance to get acclimated to new surroundings.
The Cyclones, who were forced out of Hilton Coliseum due to flooding, took the court at Ames High School for the first time Saturday, playing four tight sets, with each team winning a pair of sets.
Sophomore Jamie Straube, who was a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman team last fall, led the way with 12 kills and just three errors on 19 swings for a .474 hitting percentage. The Tecumseh, Neb. native also added a solo block and three block assists.
Junior Rachel Hockaday had 13 kills and freshman right side hitter Tenisha Matlock finished with 11 kills.
Defensively, senior Ashley Mass performed like the two-time All-American she is, posting a match-high 27 digs.
The Cyclones open the season Aug. 28-29 at the Runza/AVCA Showcase at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. Ninth-ranked Iowa State faces No. 13 Florida Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. before finishing the weekend the following day against No. 14 Kentucky, also at 2 p.m. Both matches will be nationally televised by CBS College Sports.
