AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men's basketball team has already begun prep work for the 2010-11 season, as the Cyclones started their individual workouts on Wednesday.
Developing sound habits and fundamentals is obviously an extremely important component to any successful basketball team, and the preseason individual workouts are a perfect opportunity to implement those concepts.
Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg is in his first season with the Cyclones, but he's no stranger to individual development. After earning All-America honors with the Cyclones and spending 10 years in the NBA as a player and five years in a NBA front office, Hoiberg knows the importance of developing fundamentals in the offseason.
"This is very important for us as a coaching staff to put in our philosophies on the offensive and defensive end," Hoiberg said. "It's a good opportunity to get these guys in small groups and really start teaching. We are putting them through a very demanding workout, but we know we have to get these guys in shape."
Even though it's early, Hoiberg has been impressed with the effort on the court.
"They have done a great job so far," Hoiberg added. "It was tough, but they fought through it. Guys were huffing-and-puffing, but it was a great first day. We are really trying to nail all of our philosophies so when practice opens up our players will be a step ahead. It was a good first day and I am excited because these guys seem to be picking up everything quickly."
