AMES, Iowa - A committee of Big 12 Conference faculty athletics representatives ruled Wednesday that Iowa State football recruit Rony Nelson can be admitted to Iowa State for the 2010 fall semester but must redshirt the season to be eligible to play for the Cyclones in 2011. Nelson, a junior defensive lineman, took classes over the summer in order to be eligible to get enrolled and earn a spot on the Iowa State football team.
“We are disappointed that Rony won't be able to play this season,” Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said. “But the most important thing is that he can now continue his education at Iowa State University. We are excited to have him as a student-athlete in our football program.”
Nelson led the California Community College Athletic Association with 16.5 sacks last season at Yuba Community College. Nelson, who went to high school in Miami, Fla., had 11 sacks his first year in junior college. Nelson may begin practicing immediately with the Iowa State football team.
