NORMAL, Ill.?The Iowa State soccer team played arguably its toughest competition of the young 2010 campaign Sunday afternoon and earned a 2-0 victory over Illinois State at Adelaide Field.
Illinois State (4-3-0) was in the midst of a three-game winning streak that included a victory over Kansas before facing Iowa State (5-1-2). The Redbirds are also fresh off 2009 Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Cyclones earned a victory at a tough venue, as the Redbirds were 22-2-2 in their previous 26 home matches.
After senior Jordan Bishop was fouled in the penalty area just over the half-hour mark, freshman Brittany Morgan converted on a penalty kick 31:10 into the match. The tally was Morgan's first collegiate goal.
“Jordan Bishop made a great flashing run into the box and got fouled to get us the penalty kick,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “Brittany Morgan strikes a great ball and wanted to take the PK, so we wanted to have her take it. She's created a lot of great chances this year and has had some bad luck. It was important for her to get a goal under her belt.”
Morgan doubled the Cyclone lead at the 75:46 mark off a blocked Erin Green shot attempt.
The Cyclone defense returned to its usual stinginess after conceding two goals in Friday night's loss at Loyola-Chicago. Iowa State registered its fifth shutout of the season.
“We battled physically from the opening whistle,” Dillinger said. “We won our challenges in the midfield. Caitlin Graboski did a great job of controlling the midfield and winning balls for us all day. (Illinois State's) forwards are very talented and our backs did a great job of making them play backward and with their backs to goal.”
Goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played the full 90 minutes, recorded five saves and earned her third shutout. Jobe's season record improved to 5-1-1.
Illinois State had 15 shots to Iowa State's 12. The two teams were level in shots on goal at five. The Redbirds had a 3-2 corner-kick advantage.
The Cyclones play Iowa in a Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series match Friday at 6:30 p.m. The game is currently scheduled to be played at the ISU Soccer Complex.
