AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men's basketball team begins its regular season on Nov. 12 and first year head coach Fred Hoiberg will have his team tested early on with back-to-back games vs. Missouri Valley Conference foes. The Cyclones will play host to Drake on Nov. 17 and then face Creighton on Nov. 21 in Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines as part of the Global Sports Hy-Vee Challenge. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
The Iowa State-Creighton showdown will be an outstanding opportunity for Iowa State fans in the Greater Des Moines area to root on the Cyclones in one of the finest arenas in the Midwest. It will mark the third time Iowa State will compete at the Wells Fargo Arena. The Cyclones faced Ohio State in 2005 and Bradley in 2006.
Iowa State administrators see the game as another successful venture in Des Moines.
"When we were approached by Global Sports to play in this tournament, we were excited to learn that one of the games would be in played at Wells Fargo Arena in the Des Moines," said Frank Nogel, Iowa State's Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations. "Our fans have enjoyed the games we have played at Wells Fargo in the past and we are looking forward to another great event this year."
To say the Iowa State-Creighton game will have a unique feel would be an understatement. Creighton head coach Greg McDermott is in his first season at the helm after guiding the Cyclones the last four seasons (2007-10). In the over 100-year history of the Iowa State men's basketball program, no Iowa State team has ever faced a team with a former head coach as its head coach. The emotions will be flowing on both sides.
"Anytime you have two teams competing where there are so many close relationships, it is going to raise the interest level among the players and fans," McDermott said. "Theresa and I will always have life-long friends in Ames and we enjoyed our time as members of the Cyclone family. Wells Fargo is an outstanding arena and the close proximity of Des Moines will allow the loyal fans of both teams the opportunity to watch a terrific pre-conference matchup between two solid basketball programs."
"This will be a great non-conference game for our team," Hoiberg said. "Creighton has an outstanding basketball history and is an established program. It will be a good test for us and we know that Coach McDermott will have his team ready to play."
