HIGHLIGHTSAMES, Iowa—Two second-half goals got the Iowa State soccer team off to a perfect start to the Big 12 Conference season, as the Cyclones defeated Kansas 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half, Iowa State (6-3-2/1-0 Big 12) turned up the energy in its attack, and the Cyclones' hard work was rewarded. Just 3:34 into the second half, freshman defender Jessica Stewart found the back of the net off a cross from freshman forward
Jennifer Dominguez. The goal was Stewart's first of her career and Dominguez earned her first career assist.
Iowa State scored again at the 58:38 mark when freshman midfielder
Emily Goldstein flicked in a shot past Kansas (4-6/0-2 Big 12) goalkeeper Kat Liebetrau. Dominguez was credited with her second assist of the game on the goal.
Iowa State head coach
Wendy Dillinger said Iowa State was much more relaxed in its attack in the second half.
“Before the second half we talked about being more courageous and fearless in the attack,” Dillinger said. “We started attacking the goal and not worrying about making a mistake. We had players running off the ball much better and it made a big difference.”
Dillinger also believed Dominguez's two-assist performance is a sign of things to come from the Lubbock, Texas, native.
“Jennifer is a dynamic player who just hasn't had the good luck to get involved with a goal before today,” Dillinger said. “She just needed to get something to get back on track and I think her two assists will do that. It's great for her to get going now that conference play is starting.”
Iowa State controlled the match more than just in the goals scored. The Cyclones had 13 shots to Kansas' nine and also held a 7-2 shots advantage. Kansas also trailed in the corner-kick column, 6-3.
The Cyclones split time at goalkeeper. Freshman
Maddie Jobe played the first half, while senior
Ashley Costanzo played the match's final 45 minutes. Both goalies tallied one save a piece. Costanzo earned the win and her season record improved to 1-0-1.
Iowa State's next match is its second Big 12 game, as Oklahoma travels to Ames Friday for a 6:30 p.m. contest at the ISU Soccer Complex.
