STILLWATER, Okla.?The Iowa State men's basketball team saw a 10-point second-half lead evaporate in its 96-87 overtime loss at Oklahoma State Wednesday in Gallagher-Iba Arena. With 26 seconds remaining in the second half, a 3-point bucket by the Cowboys' Keiton Page tied the game at 78-78 which would prove to be the score at the end of regulation. Oklahoma State would go on to outscore Iowa State 18-9 in the overtime period.
Iowa State dropped to 14-5 on the season and 1-3 in Big 12 Conference play. Oklahoma State improved to 14-4 overall and 2-2 in league action.
Iowa State was led by Diante Garrett's team-high 25 points and six assists. With his six assists, Garrett moves into a tie with John Lucas in ninth place in career assists (531) on the Big 12 all-time leaderboard.
Senior Jamie Vanderbeken poured in 20 points with six 3-pointers. Vanderbeken and Jake Anderson tied for the Cyclones' team high in rebounds with eight apiece.
Junior guard Scott Christopherson connected on a pair of 3-pointers to extend his streak of games with a bucket from behind the arc to 21. Christopherson tied Dedric Willoughby for second on the Cyclones' all-time list in consecutive games with a 3-pointer.
Iowa State shot 18-20 from the free-throw line, led by Bubu Palo's 8-8 performance.
In the first half, Iowa State rode a hot hand from the free-throw line going an impressive 13-14 from the charity stripe.
Vanderbeken paced Iowa State with 11 points in the opening frame, buoyed by a 3-4 effort from beyond the arc. Vanderbeken hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the game at 38-38, which remained the score at the intermission.
Iowa State continued to go to Vanderbeken to start the second half, as the Belleville, Ontario, native made back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cyclones a 44-38 lead. Vanderbeken's second 3-pointer of the half capped a 9-0 personal run by the 6-11 senior and was part of a 23-8 Cyclone spurt.
