AMES, Iowa - Sophomore forward Chelsea Poppens had 17 points and eight rebounds Sunday as No. 19 Iowa State (11-2) defeated Chicago State (6-8), 62-48, for its fifth-straight win in front of 7,367 at Hilton Coliseum.
Poppens, who has been red-hot in the Cyclones' home stand, hit on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor and has led the Cyclones on the boards in the last four games, collecting 51 total rebounds in that span.
Freshman forward Hallie Christofferson tallied 17 points in the contest, her fifth-straight double-digit point performance and her seventh of the season. Her 17 points fall just shy of her career-best 19 points, scored against Northern Iowa.
Kelsey Bolte, who had three points in the first 20 minutes on 1-of-6 shooting found a groove in the second half to end the day with 12 points, making her the 12th all-time scorer in Iowa State history with 1,286 career points.
The Cyclones came out cold in the second half, scoring their first point of the half on a Kelsey Harris free throw and not getting their first bucket until the 15:38 mark on a Poppens layup. A similar drought by Chicago State allowed Iowa State to maintain its lead as the visitors went one for seven in that time.
After the second timeout of the half though, Iowa State came alive on offense, going on a 15-2 run capped by a three-pointer by Lauren Mansfield from the top of the key with nine minutes left to play to seal the victory for Iowa State. The Cougars never got closer than 11 the rest of the way.
Chicago State stayed with the Cyclones throughout the first half, trailing by no more than 10 as the Cyclones took leads of 28-18 and 31-21 before Cougar forward Courtney Waldon sank a trey with 34 seconds left on the clock to draw Chicago State within seven, down 31-24 at the half.
Poppens led Iowa State with 11 points and four rebounds in the first half. Anna Prins also added four rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
The Cougars spread the ball around on offensive before halftime with Caila Desroches leading the team with seven points. Waldon added six for Chicago State and Janay Dockery had five points heading into the locker room.
Iowa State hosts North Dakota State on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. in the team's final non-conference game of the season.
