AMES, Iowa - Steven Pledger scored a career-high 38 points, including hit a pair of three-point baskets in overtime, to lift Oklahoma to 82-76 overtime Big 12 victory at Iowa State Saturday in Hilton Coliseum. The win improves the Sooners to 3-3 in the Big 12 and 11-9 overall. The Cyclones are now 1-6 in Big 12 play and 14-8 overall.
Iowa State led 72-69 in the extra period on a Melvin Ejim three-pointer with 3:09 remaining before the second of Pledger's treys put Oklahoma ahead 75-72 with 2:04 left in overtime. Pledger's steal and bucket gave OU a 77-72 advantage with 1:46 left in overtime and the Sooners held on to win. Pledger's previous career-high was 23 on two occasions. The sophomore made seven of 13 three-point attempts.
Iowa State has lost two overtime games in Big 12 play and another by one point. Ejim led Iowa State with 19 points and 12 rebounds, off the bench. Diante Garrett and Jake Anderson scored 18 points apiece for the Cyclones. Garrett had made a pair of threes that had put Iowa State ahead, for the first time in the game, 54-53 with 8:23 left in regulation.
Iowa State had come back from a 15-point first-half deficit and led 67-61 with 3:35 left in regulation. The Sooners' biggest advantage was 34-19 on another Pledger three with 5:34 remaining in the first half.
ISU hit on only 5-of-24 three-point attempts in the game, which it offset by hitting 19-of-23 free throws and outscoring OU 36-16 in the paint. Iowa State out-rebounded Oklahoma, 45-34. Oklahoma, however, made 11-of-27 shots from beyond the arc.
Iowa State plays at Colorado Tuesday in a game that will tip off at 8 p.m. CST.
