KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Iowa State's divers continued their competition at the Tennessee Diving Invitational Tuesday with 1-meter diving.
Sarah Nelson led the way for the Cyclones on the day, taking 14th place on 1-meter with a score of 239.60.
She was only two places away,” Iowa State diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “She missed two dives and with just a little bit of tweaking she would be in finals. I was impressed with how she came back on her last two dives and hit those dives really well. She moved up but not quite enough.”
Nelson was in contention for a spot in the 12-diver finals but a low score on her fourth dive, a reverse 1 ½ somersault pike, caused her to drop down the pecking order. The junior did finish strong, posting 47.50 points on her backward 1 ½ somersault, 1 ½ twist free.
“She just crowded into the board and was leaning forward,” Warrick stated. “She did not set the dive up and she jumped out too far and was short. She had been taking great hurdles all day long, even in warm ups, but we have to work on being consistent.”
After sitting out 3-meter due to illness,
Jenn Botsch returned to the boards on Tuesday. The junior finished in 23rd place with a score of 214.95. Botsch got off to a slow start and finish, posting scores below 30 points on each end of her diving list.
“I thought she did really well,” Warrick noted. “She did miss her front 2 ½ but otherwise she was very solid. I was happy considering how she has been. I was happy that she was able to step up and compete today.”
Justine Anders was next in line for the Cyclones, finishing 32nd with a score of 196.30.
Abby Christensen was nearby in 34th place (195.70) and
Marley Dobyns and Jessica Nicholson rounded out the Cyclone group on the day with finishes of 41st (162.25) and 42nd (162.00), respectively.
Competition wraps up tomorrow with platform diving. The finals-only event begins at 10:30 a.m.
