AMES, Iowa - Iowa State defeated conference opponent Texas Tech Friday at the ISU Soccer Complex 1-0 in a double overtime thriller. The Cyclones (8-8-1/1-5 Big 12) topped the Red Raiders (10-6-2/3-3-1 Big 12) with a golden goal by sophomore Jennifer Dominguez in the second-overtime period.
Dominguez followed her own rebound and with finesse, finished her shot at the 7:18 remaining in the final overtime period. The Lubbock, Texas native placed the ball nicely into the left corner off a one-touch finish for a goal against her hometown team. A number of offensive attacks were sparked by Dominguez throughout the game as she had five shots, two of which were on goal.
With just over 30 minutes to play in the second half, Dominguez had two opportunities as she brought the ball up the field, but both shots soared just over the crossbar. Another Dominguez effort was halted by a diving save by Texas Tech goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. The 5-foot-2-inch forward now has team-high five goals on the season and leads the squad in shots with 42.
The Cyclones outshot the Red Raiders 8-4 in the first half and finished with 18 shots to Texas Tech's 16.
Iowa State sophomores Meredith Skitt, Brittany Morgan and Caitlin Graboski each had a pair of shots on the night.
Defensive efforts by Lindsay Frank and Jessica Stewart kept the Red Raiders from getting solid looks inside the box. Raider senior Taylor Lytle led Texas Tech with five shots, but was shut down by Frank on numerous one-on-one matchups. Frank had two solid tackles against Lytle that thwarted Texas Tech's momentum.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Jobe had a season-high seven saves and improved her season record to 4-2-1. The Cyclones recorded their eight shutout of the season, and Jobe now has five clean slates for the 2011 campaign.
Iowa State is back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Kansas at the ISU Soccer Complex. The match will also serve as senior day to honor the careers of Mary Kate McLaughlin, Emily Hejlik, Amanda Cacciatore and Amanda Mayberry. The tilt will also likely be the last-ever match at the ISU Soccer Complex.
