AMES, Iowa - The Cyclone men's basketball team started its 2011-12 campaign with an 86-77 victory over Lehigh Saturday. In front of a Hilton Coliseum audience of 13,343, sophomore Royce White scored 25 points on 9-15 shooting. The Minneapolis, Minn., native also notched 11 rebounds to record a double-double in his career debut.
Senior Scott Christopherson added 12 points, two of them 3-point baskets. Chris Babb, Chris Allen and Anthony Booker each had 10 points. Booker had five rebounds and Tyrus McGee and Babb each had four.
Iowa State tied up the game after the eight-minute mark in the first half and kept the lead for the remainder of the game. White rallied the team with one assist, four rebounds and 14 points in his 17 minute half. He dunked twice on Lehigh defenders. The Cyclones went to the lockerroom with a 42-39 lead, making 13 of 27 shots.
In the second half, Iowa State held the Mountain Hawks to 10 points for nearly eight minutes. Three baskets in a row from the behind the arc marked the Cyclones' biggest lead of 26 points. Lehigh answered in the last four minutes, putting 16 points on the board.
Iowa State shot 45.5 percent (10-22) from behind the arc. From the floor, the Cyclones were 30-53 (56.6 percent) and held Lehigh to 44.4 percent on the floor and 23.8 percent from the behind arc.
Holden Greiner led the Hawks with 17 points and nine rebounds. C.J. McCollum had16 points on 14 shots from the floor. Anthony D'Orazio also had five boards.
The season opener had eight players to score at least five points and spend nine or more minutes on the floor. Together the Cyclones collected 38 rebounds, had four blocks and five steals. From the line they shot 76.2 percent, making 16 of 21 free-throws.
