AMES, Iowa - Carly Jenson hit a career-high .519 to lead the No. 13 Iowa State Cyclones to a 3-0 (25-23 25-21 25-14) sweep of Kansas State Wednesday evening at Hilton Coliseum. The win improves the Cyclones to 21-4 overall, 12-2 in the Big 12. The Wildcats drop to 18-10 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
"I thought it was a little sluggish at times," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "We had stretches where we were good and we had stretches where we did not execute the things that we have been talking about. I thought we could have been a lot better."
Jenson posted a team-high 16 kills in the match that marked the first time in the senior's Iowa State career that she hit over .500 for a match and she also posted her 13th double-double of the season, adding 14 digs.
"That was probably one of the best matches I have seen her play," Johnson-Lynch stated. "I love that an upperclassman is playing that way. I feel every great team needs a go-to player. She is the definition of a go-to for us, she is reliable and consistent. She got to some balls tonight and I did not know how she got to them tonight. She is a tremendous player and she deserves the recognition she gets."
Victoria Hurtt was second for the Cyclones with eight kills at a .333 hitting percentage. The freshman also added three block assists.
"I think she is hitting well offensively," Johnson-Lynch noted. "She is making good attack decisions and she is blocking really well. She is a very good blocking presence. If you hit at her, you are probably getting blocked. She is doing a really nice job all the way around."
Kelsey Petersen was also among the Cyclone leaders with eight kills and three block assists of her own.
"Kelsey has made huge strides from last season," Johnson-Lynch said. "She is playing the best of her career at the moment."
Jenson was the driving force for Iowa State in the third set, posting six kills in the last stanza. The Cyclones hit .310 as a team and restricted the Wildcats to .028 hitting on the set.
Jenson had five kills in set one as the teams fought to the very end before the home team pulled out the win. Iowa State lead 9-5 early but timely kills from Lilla Porubek tied the game at 10 and Kansas State stayed close for the remainder of the set.
In set two, the Cyclones jumped out to a 7-1 lead but errors gave the Wildcats a shot as they closed the gap to 12-11. Jenson added five more kills in the second set and Hurtt contributed five as well, including the game-winner to give Iowa State the 2-0 match lead at halftime.
Kathleen Ludwig and Kaitlynn Pelger led Kansas State with nine kills and four block assists apiece. Tristan McCarty frustrated the Cyclones with four service aces.
On Saturday, the Cyclones travel to Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears at 2 p.m. CST.
