TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Corey Ihmels' Iowa State cross country team is climbing the national ladder. The Cyclones placed three runners among the top-30 finishers to earn the Ihmels' runners team a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday at the LaVerne Gibson cross country course.
The performance was Iowa State's best national finish since placing second in 1985. The Cyclones were eighth in 2010. Iowa State had 290 points. Georgetown won the national title with 162 points.
Betsy Saina again earned All-America honors, pacing the Iowa State effort with a ninth-place overall finish (19:50.7). Cyclone Meaghan Nelson was 17th (20:05.0), followed by Dani Stack in 30th (20.21.9). All three earned All-America honors. Sophomore Morgan Casey placed 104th and senior India Lee placed 208th. Taylor Petersen finished 217th and Katy Moen placed 248th in the field. Sheila Reid of Villianova covered the 6,000-meter course in 19:41.2 to claim the individual title.
"Our top three gave us another consistent performance," Ihmels said. "Betsy gave us a strong effort. Meaghan and Dani have become runners of national prominence through a lot of dedication. Seventh place is a good performance but we could have been even higher with a stronger performance by the balance of our team."
The improvement of Nelson and Stack to All-America status has impressive. Nelson placed 158th at the NCAA meet in 2009. Stack did not finish in 2010.
"Overall, this was probably the best race of my career," Stack said. "I am working on my pace. Today I felt strong in the final 1,000 meters."
The 6,000-meter course was soft from recent rain. It drizzled on and off throughout the morning.
