AMES, Iowa - On Friday night, the Iowa State volleyball team will kick off its sixth-consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament hosting Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first round at 7:30 p.m. CDT. Miami (FL) and Northern Illinois play in the first match of the day, at 5 p.m.
The Cyclones earned the tournament's four-seed, the highest seed in program history, after finishing the season second in the Big 12 with an overall record of 22-5 and a conference record of 13-3. Along the way, Iowa State soared to No. 3 in the RPI thanks to one of the country's most difficult schedules and three wins over top 25 teams including a 3-2 upset of No. 9 Florida in Gainesville.
Seniors Carly Jenson, Caitlin Mahoney, Kelsey Petersen and Debbie Stadick were honored at the Cyclones' regular season finale last Saturday. On Friday, they will become only the second volleyball class in Cyclone history to appear in the NCAA tournament in each year of their tenure at Iowa State.
Jenson was a unanimous selection by the Big 12 coaches to the First Team All-Big 12 this season and was joined on the team by Jamie Straube and Alison Landwehr. Libero Kristen Hahn took home the league's top libero honor, marking the fourth-straight season a Cyclone has won the award. Former Iowa State libero Ashley Mass garnered the honor from 2008-10.
The Panthers bring their own well-decorated squad to Hilton on Friday as the regular season and conference tournament champions of the Horizon League. Milwaukee boasts a 25-4 overall record and was a perfect 16-0 in league play this season. Fifth year coach Susie Johnson was named the Horizon League's top coach for leading her team to a blemish-free conference record and senior Kerri Shuh was named the conference's top player.
Although hitting only .221 on the season, Milwaukee has shut down opponents on defense, blocking 2.55 attacks per set, in large part because of middle blocker Rachel Neuberger who is averaging 1.17 blocks per set entering Friday's contest. Mackenzie Millis (1.12) and Shuh (1.03) are also stout defenders at the net. Foes hit just .152 against the Panthers with 12.34 kills per set during the regular season.
All-session tickets can be purchased now at cyclones.com (click here), by phone (1-888-478-2925) or at the Iowa State Athletics Ticket Office. Single-session tickets for Friday's first round matches go on sale at the Hilton box office at 4 p.m. Tickets for Saturday's second round match go on sale Saturday at 5:30 p.m., also at the Hilton box office.
