MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Iowa State freshman Victoria Hurtt scored a career-high 24 kills but could not lift the Cyclones (25-6) past the Florida State Seminoles (25-6) in five back-and-forth sets as the Cyclones were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by the scores of 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 11-15. Hurtt and teammates Carly Jenson and Kristen Hahn were named to the all-region tournament team.
It was a career night for many Cyclones as middle blocker Tenisha Matlock notched a career-best 15 kills on .414 hitting and picking up three block assists. Setter Alison Landwehr added a career-high 66 assists and Jenson contributed 14 kills and a career-high 28 digs for her 17th double-double of the season. Landwehr's 66 assists is the most by a Cyclone since the 2008 season.
Florida State held the Cyclones to .204 hitting on with 16 total blocks, the second-most blocks by an Iowa State opponent this season. Sareea Freeman had 10 total blocks (two solo, eight assists). Iowa State also racked up a season-high 31 errors in the match. On the defensive side of the ball, Iowa State struggled to stop FSU senior Jekaterin Stepanova who finished with 20 kills and hit .378 in the match.
In the decisive fifth set Iowa State took a 4-1 lead but after a timeout by the Seminoles, came back to tie the score on a 3-0 run behind two kills from Stepanova. The Cyclones stepped up again, leading 10-9 on a kill by junior Jamie Straube but three late errors from Iowa State helped FSU to a match point at 14-11 and Visnja Djurdjevic sent the Seminoles into the semifinal round with an ace.
The Seminoles led most of the way in game one, up 9-6 before Hurtt tied the set at 12-12. From there, Florida State went on an 8-3 run to take the 20-15 lead that Iowa State would not recover from. An error by Matlock ended the set in which FSU tallied only two errors in hitting .457 and the Cyclones struggled on offense, committing six errors. Jenson, Straube and Djurdjevic led the game with five kills each.
Kelsey Petersen and Straube started the second set with a double block before the teams began trading points. Matlock led a late 3-1 run by the Cyclones with three kills to take a 19-16 lead but Florida State came back, pulling within one before Jenson, getting her first two kills of the set, put Iowa State up 24-23. Matlock came through again, smashing a kill to center court to tie the match at a set apiece. Heading into the locker room, Hurtt led all players with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
Iowa State led 10-6 early in game three but FSU came back to tie the score at 14 on a Rachael Morgan ace and the Seminoles continued their march, taking a 20-18 lead that they would not relinquish as Iowa State committed three-straight errors to end the set, falling behind 1-2.
As it did against Miami in the second round, Rachel Hockaday's serve put Iowa State up in the fourth, sealing a 4-0 run with an ace to take a 14-10 lead over the Seminoles. Once again, FSU returned the favor, going on a 6-1 run to regain the lead, 16-15. The Cyclones refused to go down, finishing the set on a 10-3 run and once again led by Hurtt who was 5-for-7 with no errors in the set and was hitting .366 as the teams headed into the decisive set.
Iowa State closes the season with its second trip to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight round in four years and its six-straight trip to postseason. The squad became just the second in program history to notch 25 wins in a season and tied a program record of five wins over top 25 teams.
