AMES, Iowa - The No. 4-seeded Iowa State Cyclones advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-23, 25-23) over Milwaukee Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win improves the Cyclones to 23-5 on the year while the Panthers finish the season at 25-5.
Jamie Strabue had a night to remember for the Cyclones. The junior posted 15 kills at a career-high .652 hitting percentage. Her .652 clip ranks second in Iowa State NCAA Tournament history for hitting percentage. Straube was also a key in the Cyclones' nine team blocks with a team-high four block assists.
Hannah Willms made the most of her NCAA Tournament debut with 10 kills. The redshirt freshman also contributed one solo block and a block assist in the victory.
The third set highlighted Straube's impact on the Cyclones. Straube posted six kills on nine attacks and two block assists as Iowa State locked up the match 25-23. The defense of Debbie Stadick off the bench was also important as the senior posted one kill along with a solo block and two assists in the third.
Carly Jenson was the key factor to the Cyclones 25-23 second-set win. The senior posted six kills in the set along with four digs. Willms contributed five kills to the Cyclone effort while Tenisha Matlock added three kills for the Cyclones.
Straube took control of set one for Iowa State, slamming home six kills to lead both teams. Two blocks and 15 digs by the Cyclones held Milwaukee to just .094 hitting and only eight kills.
Elizabeth Egerer led Milwaukee on the night with 10 kills and a solo block. Julie Kolinske and Kerri Schuh each added seven kills. Libero Morgan Potter led the Panthers defense with 11 digs.
Iowa State returns to the court for its second-round matchup against Miami (FL), who knocked off Northern Illinois 3-1 in the first match of the night at Hilton Coliseum. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST.
