AMES, Iowa - Among the 21 additional athletes who recently qualified to compete at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials are former Iowa State wrestlers
Jon Reader and David Zabriskie. The Olympic Team Trials will take place at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, April 21-22.
Reader finished his Iowa State career with a 39-0 record in 2011 and an NCAA title at 174 pounds. The three-time All-American claimed a Big 12 title crown and a Midlands Championship.
Zabriskie was the 2010 Heavyweight NCAA champion and a three-time All-American for the Cyclones. The 6-footer finished his senior campaign with a 26-2 record and garnered his third Big 12 crown in his final season with Iowa State.
The men's wrestlers earned their spots in the field based upon results at the Men's Freestyle Olympic Trials Qualifier, held in Las Vegas, Nev., Dec. 3. The top three athletes in each of the seven weight classes who had not already qualified, earned their spot into the field in the qualifier.
Since the qualification process for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials began, 115 athletes have already earned their spot in this elite field. The qualification process will continue in the months leading up to the event.
Four former Cyclone grapplers were among the first 65 qualifiers for the trials in early October. National champion Jake Varner automatically qualified for the Championship Final Series. Three other Iowa State alums received automatic qualification: Cael Sanderson,
Travis Paulson and
Trent Paulson.

Each of the three Olympic styles of wrestling will have a different qualification process, as proposed by their individual Sports Committees, presented by USA Wrestling and approved by the USOC.
The next scheduled event to provide an opportunity to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for wrestling is the U.S. Open for Greco-Roman and Women's Freestyle will be held in Arlington, Texas, Dec. 16-17, 2011. Seven athletes in each weight class will qualify for Iowa City from this event in both styles.
In addition to listing the athletes by weight class, USA Wrestling is also producing a list of qualifiers based upon their college affiliation, either as a current or past student-athlete, current coach or involvement with a Regional Training Center.
