DUANE SORENSON INTERVIEW
AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team collected five event wins, and a new school record Friday night while hosting in-state rival Iowa. The Cyclones fell in the end, 176-124. This loss drops the Cyclones 3-2 on the year.
“I was very pleased with the way that the women came out and were aggressive,” head coach
Duane Sorenson said. “That was one of our goals to compete and do the best that you can in each race, and that was how the meet went."
Sophomore
Emily Wiltsie set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in with a time of 2:15.31. Wiltsie also set the second pool record of the evening for the Cyclones. She previously took first place in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:03.57, another personal best.
“Emily almost got the breaststroke record at the Northwestern meet,” Sorenson said. “For her to come back and get it here was a great sense of satisfaction. She really wanted that race and you could tell her last length she was not going to be denied.”
In the 50 freestyle, freshman
Amanda Paulson earned a new pool record as well as personal best time, touching the wall with a time of 23.06.
“Amanda just swam a great race, the pool record was from 1982 by a former Olympian (Tammy Thomas of Kansas) so that was really cool,” Sorenson said. “She got a lot of confidence when she anchored the 200 medley relay then winning it, and we said repeat it. She took off from the start, and it was over before he turned.”
The Cyclones started out the meet strong, with the 200 medley relay team of
Dani Harris,
Imelda Wistey,
Sarah Norris and Paulson finishing first with a time of 1:42.91, placing the squad fourth overall in Cyclone history. Paulson came-from-behind on the anchor leg with a 50 free split of 22.78.
In the 200 backstroke, the Cyclones eard the top-two finishes, with Harris finishing first with a time of 2:00.06, a season-best. Freshman
Bre Loeschke finished second with a time of 2:00.97, a personal best. Loeschke is now fifth in school history in the event.
“Bre's 200 backstroke was her best time by over three seconds, so that was fantastic,” Sorenson noted.
Freshman
Elizabeth Kleiner lead the Cyclones in the 500 freestyle, finishing third with a time of 4:58.44, a personal best and tenth in Cyclone history.
The Cyclones finished the evening with a second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The team consisting of Paulson,
Katie Vollhaber,
Britta Sortland and Kleiner finished with a time of 3:27.84.
In the diving well,
Sarah Nelson led the Cyclones, finishing second on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
“I was really excited, especially after 1-meter, “ diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “That's the best all six divers have ever dove top to bottom. Some of them had their highest, not just season but personal best.”
On the 1-meter board Nelson finished with a final score of 275.32, which improves her previous ninth place spot in Cyclone history. On 3-meter she ended the night with a score of 290.93 putting her ninth in Cyclone history. Both of Nelson's scores were above the NCAA Zone Diving Championships qualifying standard.
“Sarah did an outstanding job, she set two personal bests," Warrick noted. "With this environment she could have had a lot of pressure on her shoulders, but she handed it well and did fantastic.”
Also on the 1-meter board,
Jessica Henderson finished third with a score of 272.09.
Jenn Botsch finished sixth with a final score of 235.58.
“I thought on 3-meter Jenn really stepped up and really did well,” stated Warrick
Botsch and Henderson also saw fifth and sixth place finishes on the 3-meter board, with scores of 247.57 and 243.23 respectively.
The Iowa State divers will be the next group in action, competing at the Georgia Diving Initational January 3-5. The swimmers will go on their winter training trip to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and be back in action Jan. 27 at Nebraska-Omaha.
