AUSTIN, Texas- Tristan Thompson scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace No. 5 Texas to a 76-53 victory over Iowa State Tuesday night in Austin, Texas. Thompson was helped by teammate Jordan Hamilton's 20 points to improve the Longhorns to 24-4 overall and 12-1 in Big 12 play.
The Cyclones, now 14-14 overall and 1-12 league play, were led by Diante Garrett's 16 points. Iowa State shot just 33.3 percent from the field compared to UT's 46.8 percent clip.
Iowa State kept the game close throughout the opening minutes. Five-straight points by Diante Garrett gave the Cyclones an 11-8 lead with 14:27 remaining in the first half. It was the first time this season the Longhorns fell behind at home in league action.
UT slowly took the lead and went into the half with a nine-point cushion (35-26). The Cyclones failed to score a point in the final 4:55 of the opening stanza. However, the Cyclones kept in the game with their defense, holding UT to close to five minutes without a basket to keep the deficit under double digits.
By the first media timeout of the second half, the Longhorns had increased its lead to 19 points (52-33). Hamilton drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to cap off a 10-2 Longhorn run and give the home team a comfortable lead.
Scott Christopherson tallied 12 points and made two 3-pointers to increase his school record streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 30. He has 77 3-pointers on the year to tie for sixth with Mike Taylor on Iowa State's single-season 3-pointers made list. Diante Garrett finished the game with 16 points and four assists for the Cyclones. Garrett now has 168 dimes on the year to rank 10th on Iowa State's single-season assist chart.
The Cyclones were yet again without the services of Jamie Vanderbeken, who missed his third-straight game while nursing a sprained ankle.
Iowa State returns home to face Nebraska in Hilton Coliseum on Saturday (Feb. 26). Tipoff is set for 12:45 p.m.
