AMES, Iowa - In his first game back after missing three contests with an ankle injury, forward Jamie Vanderbeken recorded his first double-double of the season. Vanderbeken's 13 points and 10 rebounds led the Cyclones, as Iowa State beat Nebraska (18-10, 6-8 Big 12), 83-82, in front of 12,684 at Hilton Coliseum. With the win, Iowa State improves to 15-14 overall and 2-12 in Big 12 Conference play.
Adding two blocks to his day's stats, Vanderbeken has collected 47 total blocks this season, ninth most in single-season Cyclone history.
Guard Diante Garrett added to his legacy as well, as his nine assists in the game moved him into third all-time at Iowa State with 493 for his career. Garrett was the leading scorer for the Cyclones with 17 points against Nebraska.
Scott Christopherson (14), Melvin Ejim (13) and Jake Anderson (12) also posted double-digit scoring afternoons for the Cyclones.
Even as Nebraska's Lance Jeter (27 points, 10 rebounds) and Brian Jorge Diaz (18 points, 11 rebounds) lit the court for double-doubles, they could not get their team past a rejuvenated Cyclones' team determined to win.
For the seventh time this season, Iowa State led with less than a minute remaining in regulation, up 72-69 with 16 seconds to go, before allowing its opponent to draw even or take the lead. The difference on Saturday was the Cyclones' refusal to lose another game so late in the contest, and instead it rode Vanderbeken's five overtime points to victory.
Nebraska might have won the game in regulation were it not for four free throws from Garrett with under a minute on the clock to sustain the Cyclones' three point edge, taking away the outright win from the Huskers when Jeter's trey swished home with 4 seconds on the clock.
Both teams spread the ball around in the first half, no player from either team scoring more than Anderson and Jeter's nine points. All of Anderson's points came within the last 6:11 before halftime.
The teams were evenly matched throughout the half but a 14-6 run, started with a free throw by Anderson, ended the balanced scoring and put the Cyclones up by eight heading into the lockerroom. The game marked only the second time in conference play, and the seventh time this year, that Iowa State recorded 40 or more points in the first half.
The Cyclones will honor this year's seniors next Wednesday, March 2, in the home season finale against Colorado, starting at 6:30 p.m. CST.
