AMES, Iowa - Two of the best free-throw shooters in recent college basketball history are squaring off in a free-throw shooting contest as part of the Shots From the Heart campaign.
Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg and New Mexico head coach Steve Alford are battling in the Elite Eight of the Shots From the Heart contest, which is sponsored by CollegeInsider.com to help raise money for the American Heart Association and promote awareness for heart disease. The winner will advance to the Final Four of the tournament which will be contested at the Final Four next month in Houston, Texas.
Both Hoiberg, who was a career 84.4 percent free-throw shooter as an All-American at Iowa State, and Alford, who made 89.8 percent from the line in his All-American career at Indiana, made all 25 free-throws in their head-to-head matchup. The pair are a combined 200-for-200 from the charity stripe in the first four rounds of the tournament.
The sharpshooters will now compete in a sudden death shoot-off as the tiebreaker, shooting as many free-throws as they can until a miss. Results of the shoot-off will be tallied and recorded within the week.
The staff at cyclones.com caught the last 14 of Hoiberg's free-throws in the Elite Eight. Click the embedded video player below or click in the photo above to see the video.
