LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 22 Iowa State Cyclones came up short Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse, falling to the Kansas Jayhawks 86-85 in overtime. Iowa State drops to 16-7 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 play. Kansas improves to 16-8 on the year and 3-7 in conference play. Iowa State forced overtime after being down by as much as 15 in the second half.
Iowa State saw three players put up 20-point performances in a game for the first time since 2002. Kelsey Bolte led the Cyclones with 26 points on the night, 20 of which came in the second half and overtime. Hallie Christofferson posted a career-high 21 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Chelsea Poppens had a season-best 20 points but missed the overtime session after fouling out in regulation.
Iowa State took its first lead since the first half with 3:31 to go in overtime with a Christofferson basket making it 80-79 Iowa State advantage. After KU retook the lead from the charity stripe, it was the freshman that gave Iowa State the lead back with another lay in to make it 82-81. A mishandled inbounds pass between Lauren Mansfield and Kelsey Harris gave KU the ball down 86-85 with 7.7 seconds to go. Carolyn David laid in the final two of her 31 points with 2.7 seconds left to give Kansas the victory.
Iowa State was down 77-72 coming out of the final media timeout with 1:32 to go, Poppens created a turnover and drew a foul to get to the free throw line. After making the first, Poppens got her own rebound on the second and put it back in to reduce the lead to 77-75. After one KU free throw, Bolte drained a three to tie the game at 78-78 and force overtime.
Kansas led through 20 minutes 42-36 despite the Cyclones shooting their best percentage for a half in the season, draining 16-of-23 shots at a 69.6 percent clip. However, Iowa State was only 1-of-5 from three-point range and turned the ball over 11 times. Kansas was also hot from the field in the first 20 minutes, shooting 15-for-22 and making all eight of its free throw attempts. Poppens led the Cyclones with 14 points in the half while Keena Mays was the leader for KU, picking up eight points.
Along with the 31-point performance from Davis, the Jayhawks also got 12 points from Monica Engelman and 11 points and 15 assists from Angel Goodrich.
The Cyclones return home Sunday for a showdown with the Kansas State Wildcats. The game begins at 4 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2. This is the designated WBCA Pink Zone game and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
